In her journey, she isn’t joined by any band of companions, who fill the cutscenes with romantic monologues about the power of friendship. She finds new confidence in Athia, but still lives a solitary life. She lives in poverty in New York City, and the day she finally saved enough money to move and make a better life, her home gets burned down by a gang. Then we layer on Frey’s story, which is also very sad! She’s an orphan abandoned by her parents at birth. Forspoken also relies on a photorealistic graphics style that, despite some of the vibrant magic in the combat, isn’t all that colorful - even its flowers look a little sad and colorless.

There isn’t actually a plague, but there are dark and stormy clouds that envelop entire towns and kill all the living things within. This mainly stems from the “bubonic plague vibe” it has going. Luminous Productions imbues Athia with a sort of pervasive sadness. Luminous Productions and Square Enix’s new game strikes a distinctively serious tone that makes it difficult to persevere throughout the long journey. However, despite its initial promise, much of Frey’s time in Athia unfolds without much whimsy or the requisite amount of levity. The game seems to scream: This is a JRPG! This is an isekai! There might be some glorious anime bullshit in here! Even smaller details, like the stone landmark, reminded me of Xenoblade Chronicles’ Gaur Plain. Then, after narrowly avoiding danger, we get a dramatic bird’s-eye view of the landscape, dominated by a massive stone landmark arching up into the sky.

She gets an annoyingly chatty companion named Cuff, who is literally a talking gold bracelet. She runs and ducks under broken walls in an abandoned castle with a giant dragon in pursuit.

None of which ruins Forspoken, but it does undermine what could've been a more exciting and epic adventure. From Frey’s very first steps in the medieval fantasy land of Athia, Forspoken’s influences emerge in full force. Or how a steady stream of cutscenes tends to slow down any of the story's momentum. Then there's the fact that the game's side objectives often seem more like skill-based challenges than something an adventurer would do.

Frey also tends to get stuck on things like small boulders. It also doesn't help that, throughout, the controls feel slightly off, especially when you're parkouring or running fast. Too bad the same can't be said for when you learn the liquid spells (another 5 hours afterwards), since they feel like you're throwing water balloons. It takes way too long to get halfway decent (at least 4 hours by estimate into the main plot), and then even longer to start getting good, which happens when you learn the fire sword spells (another 6 or 7 hours). She can also dodge incoming attacks using her magical parkour skills and super speed, which also help her explore the game's massive open world.īut as engaging as this tale becomes, it has some problems.

Later on, she gains new (and in some cases, better) spells that include ones based on fire and water. But while her powers are magical in nature, this initially feels like a shooter, since Frey's first batch of spells have her shooting rocks and energy bolts.

Aided by a sentient, talkative, and knowledgeable vambrace (a series of interlocking bracelets), and newfound magical powers, Frey has to fight enemies and monster alike, while helping the locals get a better life. In Forspoken, you play as Frey, a woman from modern-day New York City who finds herself transported to a medieval and magical realm. Though it has some annoying problems, and takes too long to get good, this third-person fantasy action/adventure game is ultimately rather fun.
